Speaker Biography
Dr. Fraser is an adjunct professor in mining engineering at the University of British Columbia and a researcher and instructor with the university’s Bradshaw Research Initiative for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM) where she has served as the theme lead for water stewardship. Her research and applied work focusses on social risk and social responsibility in the global mining sector with a particular interest in approaches that stimulate new opportunities for companies, civil society organizations, and governments to collaborate, create shared value, and advance the agenda of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Before joining UBC, Dr. Fraser spent 20 years working with extractive companies to enhance stakeholder engagement, create value and earn social permission for local, national, and international projects. She has extensive experience leading community engagement efforts to secure approvals for major infrastructure projects including mines, energy generation and transmission projects, and pipelines. In addition, she has worked as the senior social performance specialist for mining companies working to commission diamond mines in the Northwest Territories and northern Ontario, and a copper mine in northern British Columbia, and has advised management teams for extractive projects in several other countries.

Dr. Fraser represents the international development perspective on the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining communities of interest panel and is a member of the international stakeholder advisory group for the Consolidated Mining Standards Initiative. She is also a long-time member of the International Association of Public Participation.
